"Evaluation: an important step
to quality improvement in education"
"Valutazione: un passo importante
per migliorare la qualità dell’istruzione"

The project aims at understanding and evaluating strengths and weaknesses of different schools in order to optimize teaching/ learning methods; by comparing them, enhance the former and find a solution to the latter, so as to raise students’ performance, motivation, our European identity - against drop out.
The research, with questionnaires and analysis of data, monitoring and comparing lessons, thinking and discussing, was focused on students. It has developed a previous work and has been used for interacting positively with the various school components, enriching them with new cultural points of view, better language, technical and management competence, while making our work more pleasant, though also pointing out some serious problems.
Easily sustainable and improvable: few tools are needed –ICT and the scientific approach ( explore/ analyze / plan / evaluate) – with some good will and creativity, teachers’ necessary qualities.
The project, with problems met and solved, has been a “ workshop” of formation for all its participants on both sides – human and professional. The active involvement of students has seen a growing rise of interest.
The resulting data -collected and processed - have allowed us to communicate more intensively with our classes; each step has been taken with them so that the progress made has been shared.

Main Aims for students and teachers

1. Understanding students’ and teachers’ strengths and weaknesses in order to raise their performance.
2. Teaching students to reflect on the learning process and to make decisions.

A few notes on results from teachers’ monitoring

DIFFERENCES AMONG SCHOOL SYSTEMS

Length of the lesson (e.g. in Finland always of 45 minutes, so that it is easier to keep the class’s attention lively)
Weekly timetable (often modular and not the same every week all year round)
Tools/facilities available (in the classroom - FI always various blackboards / maps / a computer…)
Teachers’ salary ( different and corresponding to a different workload)
Different forms of support for weaker students.

We have observed all these elements with great interest, and the students have done the same, during the meetings. Below, 3 pictures of our monitoring: FI, PT, UK; here the room is typically equipped for the subject, like in FI – the students go to the teacher - who always has the most suitable tools nearby – and not viceversa.
Conclusions: Everywhere teachers are autonomous and free to work according to their professional competence, differing only for individual qualities – some favour sharing/cooperating, others are more independent.
We have not noticed any significant differences apart from communication styles, common to students – really remarkable:
In the cold north – very reserved
In the other schools – very open.
The greatest difference is in the structure – in addition to the different respect for rules by everybody, representing a different cultural background of society, e.g. meritocracy, evident not so much in teachers’ evaluating choices, as in the nation’s school structure. In fact in Finland students may be compelled to repeat the grade, like in Italy, but they are more motivated in getting better results enabling them to enter schools which may be demanding with the applicants. The same in UK.
And schools periodically assess their users’ satisfaction level: in Finland. In UK, moreover, we happened to visit the school during an inspection by OFSTED ( http://www.ofsted.gov.uk/ : The Office for Standards in Education, Children's Services and Skills (Ofsted) is the non-ministerial government department of Her Majesty's Chief Inspector of Schools In England -"HMCI" )

Students’ Survey processed and commented by students and teachers: we developed the survey –which at the time was already 2 years old: comments with the students were then published on the e-journal.
Comparison of different systems in 5 meetings (monitoring lessons, debates, in FI/UK/IT);

Students’ initiatives were encouraged: the Sardinians visit Veikkola; the Finnish arrange –during the school year – a trip to Sardinia of 23 students!

Evaluation
Evaluation has been constant, considering the type of project, and carried out with work planning, exchanges and meetings, questionnaires and debates.
These the results on the 3 years: a complex work, apparently a bit broken, but substantially coherent, deliberately linked with experiences inside Mattei (IT) and others on the Net. Aimed at interesting –even if difficult – objectives and always anchored to reality. Also with partners: lost many, for the different choices by the Agencies, then lost a school (UK), but acquired 2 new nations and new teachers.
The partners have expressed enthusiasm for the development of he project which has enabled each of us

To enhance and exploit resources in: English and ICT competence / structures/ good initiatives / hospitality / imagination/ critical sense / creativity / reservedness / communication skills/ efficiency / bureaucracy/ cooperation/ enthusiasm /traditions/ good cooking/ landscapes/… culture.
But also to become aware of one’s weaknesses - and try to solve them.

L'Istituto tecnico commerciale diventa partner europeo di Comenius

L 'Istituto tecnico Commerciale e Geometri (Itcg) tra gli otto partenariati Comenius su oltre cento concorrenti di tutta Europa. Il risultato è stato ottenuto con il progetto sullo Sviluppo della Scuola condotto nel triennio 2005/ 2008 e concluso nelle scorse settimane. «In un momento in cui tutti sottolineano la debolezza del nostro sistema scolastico», spiega la docente Maria Laura Dessì, principale ispiratrice e conduttrice dell'iniziativa scolastica, «è oggi importante capirne le cause per potervi porre rimedio, vederne i punti forti, le qualità positive, le risorse, le competenze e così poterli sfruttare». In questo senso è stato svolto il lavoro in equipe tra docenti e alunni, con scambi reciproci con realtà scolastiche di altri Paesi come Finlandia, Spagna e Portogallo. Il progetto e il lavoro dell'ITCG di Decimomannu è stato quindi premiato «per la sua innovatività, qualità nell'implementazione e gestione dell'attività, per i risultati ottenuti e le loro ricadute insieme alla sostenibilità stessa del progetto di lavoro». «La ricerca effettuata con le tre scuole europee» continua Maria Laura Dessì, «ha portato a realizzare numerose attività collegate come prodotti multimediali che hanno reso il lavoro vivace e stimolante per studenti e docenti ma soprattutto» conclude l'insegnante «abbiamo vissuto un'esperienza unica confrontandoci con partner europei e rendendoci conto di quanto siamo simili e contemporaneamente diversi per regole e personalità». I feel happy and very proud for this opportunity. Really I've been working a lot for it, obviously with very few hopes as to victory. It seems I was right in my choice of trying!

We have had so many problems: missing a partner school (UK), missing colleagues who have retired, missing good students here and then, unfortunately too often, having to start again and again trying to reach a positive goal at all costs!

But we've also had lots of happy chances: meeting nice new partners, seeing wonderful places, joking, meeting friendly and enthusiastic students (not boys or girls: students - teenagers happy to live this new experience), learning a lot of .... info, techniques, strategies... improving our human and professional areas. What else could we ask for? Really nothing. True.

Never a serious event has been so funny..:-)

We have just carried out the final meeting of our Comenius Project in Portugal, with our Finnish and Canarian partners: a whole week of May, in the north of that special country...

We have worked together -analysed strategies,objectives,tools - expressing opinions and judgments on our past activities and drawing conclusions useful for our future work..We have shared important themes with other teachers and school managers, while watching them at work with their students and their facilities.. We have compared different European school systems, looking for hypotheses useful to explain the various levels of our classes, the different results.. An exchange of points of view made sometimes difficult by the language, foreign to everybody, and the cultures behind us...

We have also visited castles, churches, gardens, sanctuaries... eaten the delicious Portuguese food (and drunk their good wine, which tastes so much like ours, Sardinian..)..

In a word, we can really say that we have lived a beautiful experience, made special by the exceptional participation of our Headteacher, and our Technician - both gifted with a good sense of humour, perfect to transform our professional meeting into an unforgettable life event!!!

Abbiamo appena realizzato l'incontro finale del nostro progetto Comenius in Portogallo con i nostri colleghi finlandesi e di tenerife: un'intera settimana di maggio, a nord di quel paese molto speciale...

Abbiamo lavorato insieme - analizzato strategie, obiettivi, strumenti - esprimendo opinioni e giudizi sulle nostre attività passate e traendo conclusioni utili per il nostro lavoro futuro. Abbiamo condiviso temi importanti con altri docenti e dirigenti scolastici, osservandoli al lavoro con i loro studenti e le loro attrezzature.. Abbiamo confrontato diversi sistemi scolastici europei, cercando ipotesi utili a spiegare i vari livelli delle nostre classi, i diversi risultati...Uno scambio di punti di vista reso talvolta difficile dalla lingua, straniera per tutti, e le culture dietro di noi..

Abbiamo anche visitato castelli, chiese, giardini, santuari.. mangiato il delizioso cibo portoghese ( e bevuto il loro buon vino che assomiglia tanto al nostro, sardo..)..Insomma, possiamo davvero dire di aver vissuto una bella esperienza, resa speciale dall'eccezionale partecipazione della nostra Preside, e il nostro Tecnico, entrambe dotate di un buon senso dell'umorismo, perfetto per trasformare il nostro incontro professionale in un indimenticabile evento!!

We have replied together, in class, to the questions of the survey about our eating habits.
These are the results from a group of about 50 persons, between 15 and 19 years of age (2A/3A/4A)

1.Where do you prefer to eat? At home or at a reastaurant? What is your favourite meal of the day? Why do you like it?
About 75% prefers the reastaurant, the rest prefers home. The reasons? Food at the restaurant is more varied; at home is safer.
Our favourite meal is lunch, because we eat more. Dinner is better for just very few...Well, dinner out is considered an opportunity for meeting friends.

2.Do you ever go out to dinner in the evening? How often? Who do you generally go with? Where do you usually go? Why?

We eat out once or twice a week: all of us. We go to a pizzeria,

with friends, to have a pizza because it's cheaper than the restaurant.

3. What's your favourite dish? Why do you like it?

Pizza, homemade pasta , chips, meat.

Our mothers love cooking: they spend a lot of their time in the kitchen. They do this because they have a strong sense of the "family", even if they have to sacrifice their free time for this aim.

4. Name some food that you do not particularly like. Why don't you like it?

We usually don't like vegetables, soups, without any particular reasons.

5. What do you usually have for breakfast? Lunch? Dinner?

Breakfast:Milk and coffee/tea/biscuits. Some have nothing!!
Lunch: pasta/ meat or fish/ salad/ fruit/coffee.
Dinner: same as lunch, often less, without the starter.

6.Do you and your family generally eat together?
Always, if possible.

7.Do you think families should eat together? Why? Why not?
We think that meals are very important meeting opportunities for the family group. In fact, we never start eating until the persons present at home are all seated around the table.

8. Is the television on while you eat?
Yes: we usually watch the news, or we choose together some other programs.

9.Do you converse with the other members of your family at mealtime?
Yes, we talk about the day events, specially at dinner, about facts and news. Also about politics. We sometimes/often argue and -even - quarrel!

10.Do you ever go on a diet? Why? Why not?
Some of us do. Most don't: we are not interested.

11.Do you think food and eating are important in life?
Of course, they are!!

12.Why are/aren't they important? Tick accordingly.

-Tenerife is a tropical paradise: it gives relaxation and quiet to inhabitants and visitors

-Environment is more respected than in Italy: you don't see garbage on the road

- People are very hospitable, and we were always comfortable

-Students talk piffle during the lessons (not acceptable here..!!)

- The sand is grey: a very special feature!!!

- Lizards are big and black!

- My family was very hospitable: I was lucky because Gabriela's father is Italian and sometimes I could speak Italian at home (he's very good at cooking, too!!)

- The house was similar to ours, but no bidet in the bathroom, like in English houses...

- The family meets for meals, like here, in my home

-I find this experience a very happy one and I hope to see my friends there, again!!!

The trip has been very beautiful and productive, especially living with a new, foreign, family. This has been very welcoming, hospitable and friendly.

I have discovered a few differences between our schools.. (ours is more severe and disciplined!!) . Tenerife is gorgeous..

Santa Cruz and Puerto De La Cruz are very beautiful cities, which everybody should visit! El Teide.. the ocean.. Even the sand...Your sand is different: dark and brown.. because of your volcanoes... ours is light yellow.. almost golden...

There, in Tenerife,environment is more respected. No rubbish around like here ...:-(

People are very welcoming, in fact we have always felt at our ease..

My score is 46. I don’t recognize me so much with this score, because I don’t have a high self-esteem level; on the contrary I am not usually confident of my choices or my thoughts. I think I am an important person only for my close friends even if I feel well with other people. Finally at school isn’t all so perfect; this is because sometimes I leave myself go because I don’t take all my responsibilities. I agree only to the fact that I don’t care of having a different look from the other people in come rain or shine.

The result of the questionnaire reflects a little as I am, because I am satisfied with my life and the choices I make “ but not always”. I regret of some choices I made. I believe to be “unique” that I have a personality and different ways of doing compared to other people. Regarding the study it goes so so , but anyway I am successful in new goals.

Comments on Self-Esteem questionnaire.

In the questionnaire some expression emphasise characteristic of my personality. In fact many times I don’t feel to be accept and appreciated, I often feel to be a too shy guy even if I don’t look like that to other people’s eyes. I put my school engagements for others things more funny. In front of some situations I’m blocke and I don’t face them.
When other people are kind with me I become suspicious and I don’t understand what teachers expect from me. When I look at myself in the mirror, I don’t like me, in fact I’d change my look if I could. I often haven’t got very trust in me, and I’ve sometimes suffered because of unexpected frustration.
In my opinion the Self-Esteem is a opinion that people have got of themselves. Many times people think of what the others like and so they change to be accepted.
40 is my result that in my opinion it reflects my personality.

My name is Alessia and my nick name is Alessietta. I’m fifteen years old, I’ve got brown eyes, brown and long hair, I’m tall and slender. In my family there are 3 people: my father, my mother and my sister; my dad’s name is Francesco, my mum’s name is Camilla and my sister’s name is Michela. My brother is a worker ,my mother is a housewife and my sister goes to elementary school. My favorite symbol is a flower because I like roses and my favorite personality fruit is the watermelon because I love summer. My favorite hobby is volleyball; in my free time I like watching TV, listening to music and hanging out with my friends. I don’t like doing homework or studying. I can use the computer, cook and play volley. My town is in the south of Sardinia. Sardinia is an island on the east of Italy and there is a very beautiful sea around: Costa Smeralda, Porto Cervo…. And tourists come especially in summer. In my village there are 7.000 people, one railway station, three sports grounds and one big park. My favourite festival is Santa Vitalia because it is very big in comparison to others. The good sides of my town are the festivals because there are some more entertainments, the bad sides are the facilities because the town is small. My favorite singer is Tiziano Ferro because I love his songs and his style.

At 7.50 am I take the bus and I arrive at school at 8.05. At 8.10 the school starts. We have 6 lessons every day and with a short break from 10.55 am to 11.05, when we have a snack. I leave school at 13.40 am and I take the bus back home. At 14.10 the bus arrives and I walk home: just 10 minutes. I have lunch and watch TV. In the evening I do my homework and at 6.30 pm I go out with my friends to the park. When I come back home I have dinner with my family and at 10.30 pm I go to bed! On Saturday I go to the pizzeria with my friends (especially in the cold seasons). I love the parties with my friends for their birthdays, because there are more teenagers and we dance and we have a good time!I live in Uta, a small town near Cagliari. Uta has 7.000 inhabitants . In September there’s Santa Maria. This is the only festival funny for the teenagers. There are more games where we can have fun, such as the “canguro”, the “tagadà” etc.. ..from 6 to 9-10 of September. Uta is a boring town because it’s small and there aren’t many meeting places for the teenagers. My favourite singer is Tiziano Ferro. I think he’s very nice and his songs are beautiful!

It is a secondary technical for : Accountants/ Accountant Programmers/ Geometricians/ Tourism + evening classes for adults.About 700 students (14-19 years old ) and 90 staff. It's situated in the south of Sardinia, in a small town, Decimomannu, (about 7000 inhabitants),17 Km from our main city, Cagliari. Most students come from nearby villages, by train or bus. It is well equipped: Meeting Hall, Gymnasium (for individual and group work), Library, Football ground, various Laboratories (16) for Languages, Sciences, Video, Informatics, Topography, Drawing..... with a good staff willing to cooperate and students ready to... enjoy themselves and learn something in.. between.....
